Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, Reflecting on Economic Justice, and Understanding Tax Implications

Juneteenth Celebration

June 19, 2025 | By The Oasis Firm Editorial Team

What Is Juneteenth and Why Does It Matter?

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth—the oldest nationally celebrated remembrance of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality for Black Americans.

The Economic Legacy: From Emancipation to Today

While Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment of legal freedom, it also prompts reflection on the economic challenges that followed emancipation. After 1865, newly freed Black Americans faced immense barriers to building wealth—lacking land, capital, and access to fair financial systems. This legacy continues today, as the racial wealth gap persists and Black families, on average, hold a fraction of the wealth of white families.

Tax policy has played a significant role in this story. Historically, Black Americans were not only denied property and opportunity, but were also taxed inequitably—first as property themselves, and later through property tax systems that disproportionately burden Black families even today. These inequities have perpetuated economic disparities across generations.

Tax Policy, Financial Literacy, and Economic Freedom

Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance—it’s a call to action for economic justice. Financial literacy, equitable tax policy, and access to tax benefits are crucial tools for closing the wealth gap and advancing true freedom. Programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit have provided important support for low- and middle-income families, but expanding access and awareness remains vital.

At The Oasis Firm, we believe that empowering all communities with tax knowledge and financial education is essential to building generational wealth and achieving economic equity. Whether it’s understanding your tax rights, maximizing allowable tax breaks, or planning for the future, financial empowerment is a modern form of liberation.

Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday: What It Means for Your Taxes

Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth now affects payroll schedules, tax payment deadlines, and office closures for businesses and individuals nationwide. If June 19 falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed on the nearest weekday, which can impact the timing of tax filings and payments. It’s important for businesses and taxpayers to check how federal and state holidays may affect their deadlines each year.

Moving Forward: Reflection, Education, and Action

Juneteenth is a day to honor the past, reflect on the present, and commit to a more equitable future. As we celebrate freedom, let’s also work to ensure economic opportunity and justice for all. The Oasis Firm is dedicated to supporting financial literacy, fair tax practices, and empowering every client to build a stronger financial future.
